The National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID), formally known as the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) is the focal point, the main referral centre and main training centre for infectious diseases in Sri Lanka. It is situated in Angoda, Colombo on a 34 acre block of land, consisting of 300 beds.

Our Services

Out Patient Services

Out Patient Department (OPD) is a unit committed to deliver an exceptional outpatient care service. It functions from 8.00am to 12pm and 2.00pm to 8.00pm on Monday to Friday and 8.00am to 12.00pm on Saturdays. There are separate Consultation area, outdoor dispensary, dressing room, sampling area, nebulization area, and Health Education Unit for OPD patients.

The experienced and well trained staff is our strength of our inpatient care service. Being a 300-bed hospital, wards are divided into Preliminary Care Unit, Medical Unit, Isolation unit, Dengue High Dependency unit, HIV Unit, Bhikkhu ward and Intensive Care Unit. All together there were 19621 admission to the hospital in year 2023.

Initiation of Ground Work of Laboratory Complex

Groundwork on the construction of the BSL-2 laboratory complex, which was to be constructed under the HSEP project of the Asian Development Bank, but which was stalled in the middle, was restarted.

Initiation of Preserving Historical Artifacts in the Hospital

As an ancient hospital dating back to the British colonial era, it was initiated to take necessary measures to protect and preserve its historical artefacts, ensuring these ancient objects are conserved and displayed for public viewing, honouring its rich heritage.

Installation of an Incinerator

Recognizing the critical need for a dedicated facility to safely dispose of infected waste, the Director of Health, with the support of the Additional Secretary of  Public Health Services and funding from the World Bank, initiated the installation of an incinerator, ensuring the only hospital in Sri Lanka for infectious disease patients maintains the highest standards of public health and safety.

Creation of a Website and a Facebook Page for the Hospital

Following the suggestion of Consultant Physician, Dr. Ananda Wijewickramaand under the guidance of the former hospital director, Dr. Dinesh Koggalage, with the financial support of the World Health Organization, the hospital embarked on creating a website and a Facebook page, aimed at educating the public about infectious diseases.
