Our History

Historical Milestones

Established in 1926 on the elevated grounds of Angoda, the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) emerged as a beacon of hope in the battle against contagious ailments. Situated atop the second-highest point in the Colombo district, its inception marked a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s healthcare history. On February 16th, 1926, its doors swung open, welcoming patients in dire need of care and compassion.

At its inception, the hospital comprised three permanent wards, including a paying ward, alongside several expansive temporary Cadjan sheds. With just one-grade I Medical Officer, two Apothecaries, and two Nursing Officers, the institution embarked on its noble mission.

The hospital’s strategic location and meticulously planned structures were tailored to accommodate patients grappling with infectious diseases, particularly in an era devoid of antibiotics. Despite being a mere 6 kilometres from the bustling city fort area of Colombo, the hospital’s serene surroundings and vast empty lands provided an ideal sanctuary.

Originally spreading over 62 acres, the hospital’s footprint has since shrunk to 34 acres due to land acquisition and encroachments. Nonetheless, its commitment to serving the community remains unwavering.

In its nascent years, the hospital stood strong against a variety of infectious diseases like Smallpox, Plague, Cholera, Enteric fever, Mumps, Influenza, Whooping cough, Chickenpox, and Measles, earning it the affectionate moniker, the “Fever Hospital.”

In 2008, a significant milestone was reached as the institution was elevated to the status of Base Hospital, Angoda. This marked the beginning of a transformative journey, expanding its scope to encompass allied clinical disciplines such as Medicine and Paediatrics.

Fast forward to 2016, and the hospital underwent an upgrade, emerging as the esteemed National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NIID). This renaming heralded a new era of heightened emphasis on training and research, positioning NIID as a focal point in the field of infectious disease management.

NIID rendered invaluable service during recent major pandemics, notably during the Dengue (2017) and COVID-19 (2020-2021).

Today, NIID stands as proof of resilience, boasting a dedicated staff of 460 individuals committed to patient care and support. With 300 beds at its disposal, the institute continues to serve as the premier national-level hospital specialising in infectious diseases in Sri Lanka.

Amidst ongoing health challenges, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases serves as the pioneer, showcasing the unwavering dedication of healthcare professionals in protecting public health.
